After treating them, when I see those little fellows happy and healthy, I feel blissful. The efforts I put are all worth their happiness, says Dr Girish Kumar of Pet Clinic.
The sparks of my passion could be seen all over my childhood. It could be seen where I brought small animals to home, or gave them food, or treated them when they were ill, or applied ointment to their injuries, or played with them.
While growing up in a small town called Dholpur in Rajasthan, I wondered if there are doctors for animals. I wanted to solve their problems.
So my love for animals led me to become a veterinary doctor. After my twelfth, I cleared the pre-veterinary test and did five years degree in veterinary from Bikaner.
I worked in a hospital for some time but didn’t like the environment there. So, I started looking for a place to open my clinic.
I visited Greater Noida once and liked the place very much. My journey of healing animals started in Greater Noida in 2005. I took some help from my parents and began working there.
The initial period was quite hard. At that time, there were fewer facilities. I did not have much money to invest. People were not aware of the animals or their health. However, I had decided to do it, and I did it, despite all the difficulties that came my way.
Now, people are becoming more aware and concerned about their pets. All facilities are available today. There are labs for diagnosis, right medicines, pharmaceutical and food industries involved in making it better.
Animals are like babies. They do not speak a verbal language. So, we need to understand their problem with their behaviour and treat them accordingly.
It’s a great feeling when you treat an ill animal and see him/her healthy and happy again. I understand the pain and feelings of animals very well. It helps me to treat them better.
I have named my clinic ‘Pet Clinic’. The name is straightforward and to the point. I do not limit myself to the treatment of pet animals only. I encourage people to bring stray animals as well who are ill.
Right now, I am not in a position to treat big animals, but I do help small ones. We motivate people to give shelter to these ill stray animals for a few days, and we also take help from NGOs.
Providing relief to animals is the priority of my clinic. I want to give all facilities to animals at a minimum cost and treat stray animals for free. For now, I have been quite successful in achieving my aim, but I am yet to reach there entirely.
I am trying to help these creatures in every possible way. However, everything cannot be done by me. The street animals live in poor condition. They do not get proper food to eat, nutrition to nourish their body, and treatment for their illness.
Many a time, these animals are left to starve on roads. They die out of hunger, diseases, and accidents caused by big vehicles that ignore their existence. The government should make at the least 2-3 shelters in every city for them.
Earlier, people did not have much respect for the veterinary doctor as they had for human doctors. But now, things are changing.
People look amazed when I treat their pets. They find it very fascinating that even dogs can be treated with glucose bottles. All these things generate curiosity in them. They get to know about my profession, and when they do so, they understand the value of my work.
I have a decent staff of 3-4 people in my clinic. Sometimes it could be hard to deal with animals as they are like babies. They do not speak for their illness. I have a staff of people who love animals and do not find the work burdensome. We all together work for the happiness of animals.
For the last fifteen years, I have been serving the animals, and I intend to do the same for the rest of my life. I was able to overcome all the challenges in my journey because I loved my work. I knew that one day I would be successful. So, I kept moving ahead.
We are truly warmed by the story of Dr Girish, who treats his patients with compassion. Girish has provided his valuable services in Greater Noida for more than a decade, helping animals live better lives.
